St Louis Wildlife Education: Eliminating Birds Nesting in Your Eaves

Birds nesting in your eaves is not always easy to spot. By the time you realize that they are there, they may have laid eggs and then you will be unable to remove them. It is advisable to check your eaves during the breeding season to ensure that you prevent them from building a nest in the first place.

• Make sure that you clean your eaves of all debris. If you discover nests that are under construction then remove them and clean the area with a high-pressure hose. If you keep removing the nests, the birds will eventually move to a different location.
• If you find any holes or openings under the eaves you will need to close those off immediately. This will allow the birds access to your home. This is the last thing that you want.
• Install bird spikes or needle strips under the eaves. If the birds cannot land then they cannot build a nest. Make sure to install the strips correctly, if there is any sort of opening then the birds will exploit this.
• Bird netting is an excellent way to keep birds away from your eaves. It comes in a variety of colors and can seamlessly blend into the façade of your home.
• You can also get metal netting that can be installed to close up all openings. They can be painted with the same paint as your home and will blend in completely. You will need to monitor it for weather damage. If there are any holes in it, the birds can get in through there.
• Reflective strips can be stuck to the eaves. As soon as the sun hits the strips, it will reflect. This will scare the birds away. The same effect can be replicated with broken CDs and mirrors.
• There are products available online that are designed to fit into your eaves in order to close the opening. They can be installed quite easily and will keep the birds from building a nest.
• If you don’t mind the idea of birds in your yard, you can try to relocate them. You can install small birdhouses in the area of your garden where you would rather, they build their nests.

Keeping them away
In order to keep your eaves, clear of birds, it is best to make your home unattractive to them. They will venture onto your property in search of food and shelter. If they are able to find food then they will make their own shelter. Once they have laid their eggs it is illegal to remove them. You will need to leave them until the babies are able to leave the nest on their own. If you eliminate their source of food, your home will seem like a less attractive option. They will probably move on to somewhere they can find both.
